I Am Warrior Poetry Project

To celebrate our sickle cell warriors, Streetlight collaborated with UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine to create a book of poems to showcase the stories of those living with sickle cell. Each artist contributed a poem that represented their identity, experience, and wisdom.

On April 9th, we hosted a Poetry Slam in Arts in Medicine’s Criser Center at UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital. Patients, families, health care providers, and community members attended to gather together in solidarity with our sickle cell warriors. Several artists read their poems aloud, while others requested Streetlight team members read their poems for the community.

In addition to the poetry reading, there was an art gallery on display featuring paintings inspired by each poem. These paintings were created by the student group Alpha Delta Epsilon’s Arts in Health coalition. These paintings were a complete surprise to the poets, and each poet were gifted the painting following the event!
